Postpartum bleeding stages

When What it looks like
Stage 1 First 3 to 4 days Dark or bright red, heavy
Stage 2 About days 4 to 12 Pinkish brown, lighter
Stage 3 Day 12 to about 6 weeks Yellowish white, little blood

Some people have traces for up to 8 weeks.

What is normal after birth

Lochia is a mix of blood, mucus and tissue from the uterus. At first it flows like a heavy period. Small clots can happen in the first days.

Bleeding usually drops the most in the first week. You may bleed more when you stand up, walk or breastfeed. A small rise in red bleeding around days 7 to 14 can happen too.

What to wear as bleeding slows

  1. First days: maternity pads

Bleeding is heaviest now. Use maternity pads, or disposable postpartum underwear. Notice how fast a pad fills, so you can spot warning signs.

  2. Lighter weeks: add backup

Keep using pads. You can stick the pad inside Kischt period underwear for backup. Its moisture barrier helps stop leaks reaching your clothes.

  3. After your checkup

Ask your doctor when you can stop using pads. Period underwear can then cover light days, and your periods when they return.

  4. Wash and rotate

Wash period underwear after each wear and let it dry fully. Keep a few pairs in rotation.
